2019 Review of Polling District and Polling Places Review

Decision Maker: Head of Paid Service

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

To urgently approve the recommendations resulting from the statutory review of polling districts and polling places to enable them to be implemented for the unscheduled General Election taking place on 12 December 2019.

Reasons for the decision:

Ordinarily this decision would be taken by Council, following recommendations from the General Purposes Committee. The General Purposes Committee has considered the proposals and made recommendations to Council, however, an urgent decision is being taken by the Managing Director because there is insufficient time for the recommendations to be considered by the Council in advance of the General Election. Implementing the recommendations at this time assists with the efficient conduct of the election. Group Leaders have confirmed their support for this decision.

The reasons for the recommendations resulting from the polling district review are set out in the accompanying report.

Alternative options considered:

The Managing Director could not take the decision and instead wait for the Council to make the decision, as scheduled, on 21 November, however to the recommendations would not then be able to be implemented for the General Election on 12 December and the electoral register would have to be re-published in January in order to implement the recommendations.

The options explored in respect of the polling district review are set out in the accompanying report.
